name of the Dev. When of the age of sixteen she practised great austerities that She might be the Spouse of iva, upon which Her mother, endeavouring to persuade Her, said, U ("Oh"), M ("not"). As it is said by Klidsa in the first Canto of the Kumrasambhavam; "Umeti mtr tapaso niiddh pasch dumkhyng sumukhijagma"." ("By the words U, M, She was thus forbidden by Her mother to practise austerity, thereafter the pure Um obtained Her name.") Um is Kumr, who has renounced all attachment, and is devoted to Her Lord. A "stra" runs, "I"cchaktih Um kumr" (The energy of will is Um the unmarried). The Commentary on this "stra", cited by Bhskararya, says: "The eternal state is his whose mind has ascended the degrees of "yoga" called "vismaya", and who realizes the supreme Bhairavata (an aspect of iva). That "Yogi" obtains at length the "Icchakti" called the Supreme Queen ("Parbhattrika") known also as Kumr."

The Tntrik ("seed") "mantras", such as "Hrm", "Hm", "Klm", etc. Mantras are classified according to the syllables they contain.

The Mahmantra "Om", composed of A + u + m, coalesced by "sandhi" into Om. The three "varas" signify the three members of the "Trimurti", Brahm, Viu, and iva, who, as the Rudraymala says, are born of the "Praava" (Om), and though in appearance three, are yet one ("ekamrtistrayo devh"). From the "Praava" all Devas, Vedas, sun, moon, and all being comes by the power of Dev, the supreme akti.
