Footnotes

461:1
The style now adopted is that of prophecy, as Vysa could not consistently have recorded the events which were posterior to his time.

461:2
Also read Parkshita, Parksha, and Parkshi.

461:3
See p. 457. The Vyu and Matsya relate, rather obscurely, a dispute between Janamejaya and Vaiampyana, in consequence of the former's patronage of the Brahmans of the Vjasaneyi branch of the Yajur-veda, in opposition to the latter, who was the author of the black or original Yajush (see p. 279). Janamejaya twice performed the Awamedha according to the Vjasaneyi ritual, and established the Trisarv, or use of certain texts by Amaka and others, by the Brahmans of Anga, and by those of the middle country. He perished however in consequence, being cursed by Vaiampyana. Before their disagreement, Vaiampyana related the Mahbhrata to Janamejaya. Mahbh., Adi Parvan.

461:4
The reading of the text is rather, 'his (Parkshit's) other son will be atnka;' but the commentator refers 'his' to Janamejaya. The Vyu, Matsya, and Bhgavata also make atnka the son of Janamejaya. The Brhma P. has a totally different series, or Parkshit, Srypida, Chandrpida, Janamejaya, Satyakarna, wetakarna, Sukumra, and Ajayma.

461:5
The Bhgavata interposes Sahasrnka. The Vrihatkath has the same descent, but calls the son of Sahasrnka, Udayana or Vatsa. The Bhgavata has Awamedhaja.

461:6
Adhisma k.: Vyu. Adhisoma k.: Matsya. The former states that the Vyu P. was narrated in this king's reign, in the second year of a three years' sacrifice at Kurukshetra.

461:7
Nemichakra: Bhgav. Vichakshus: Matsya. They agree with the text as to the removal of the capital, and the cause.

461:8
Ukta: Bhg. Bhrijyeshtha: Matsya.

462:9
Suchidratna, Vyu; Suchidrava, Mats.; Kaviratha, Bhg.; is interposed between Chitraratha and Vrishnmat.

462:10
Sutrtha: Vyu.

462:11
Ruchi: Vyu. Omitted: Mats. and Bhg.

462:12
Chitrksha: Vyu.

462:13
Sukhnala: Bhg.

462:14
Sutapas: Mats.

462:15
Puranjaya: Mats.

462:16
rva: Mats. Drva: Bhg.

462:17
Tigmtman: Mats. Timi: Bhgavata.

462:18
Sudsa: Bhg. Vasudman: Mats.

462:19
The Matsya concurs with the text (see above, note 5); the Bhgavata has Durdamana.

462:20
Vahnara: Bhg.

462:21
Dandapni: Bhg., Vyu, Mats.

462:22
Nimi: Bhg.

462:23
Kshepaka: Vyu.

462:24
The same memorial verse is quoted in the Matsya and Vyu P., preceded by one which states the number of princes twenty-five. The specification however, commencing with atnka, is twenty-six or twenty-seven. The passage is, ###.
